I was wondering which is better for gaming the HD 7850 or the gtx 660. I'm thinking about doing a build with these specs:

i5 3570k
8 gig ram
500 watt power supply

Are there any bottlenecks in my system? Anything I should upgrade/downgrade?

The GTX 660 is meant to be compared to the 7870, the 7850 and 660 aren't in the same price range.

Thanks! Do you think my build will be able to play Shogun 2 and other newer total war games? Also, how long do you think it will be able to play the newest games?

GTX 660 rules out 7850 by a distance.

It will ram those games.
Around 1-2 years at Ultra.

I agree, As for me i like to upgrade alot and i own the 660 Ti but i believe ima be doing some researching on a new card
December 23, 2012 6:50:00 PM

How much better is the 660 ti over the 660? Should I drop my CPU to the i5 3570k and get the 660 ti?
a b U Graphics card
December 23, 2012 6:53:34 PM

Only around 10%. I thought your CPU already is the 3570K? I'd stick with that and the GTX660 - money saved could buy multiple pizzas or an SSD (I'd recommend the Samsung 830).
December 23, 2012 7:29:49 PM

What about the gtx 670? I'm thinking about getting a card thats a little bit better then mid range? What's a good option for AMD for a little above mid range?

7970 would be ur next best option ati wise.

Yeah GTX670 is awesome! To be honest, the GTX660 is only mid-range interms of price - performancewise it's almost as fast as the GTX580 (last year's fastest GPU). But the GTX670 is better still, and the minimum if you want to max Far Cry 3 at 1080p and AA. Any game other than Far Cry 3 can be maxed on the GTX660 though.
December 23, 2012 8:41:10 PM

What is the approximate performance difference between the 660 and the 670? Also, is it possible to overclock graphic cards?
a b U Graphics card
December 23, 2012 8:44:49 PM

Around 30%. And you can overclock all of these cards.
December 23, 2012 10:02:04 PM

Would I need a special cooler or any other products to overclock the gtx 670? Also, how much performance gain happens when I overclock?

December 23, 2012 10:08:54 PM

It's down to how much you overclock and the particular game and settings. As a very general rule of thumb, you can expect around 10% framerate increase from a 15% core clock and memory increase.
December 24, 2012 1:28:31 AM

Are there any real risks to overclocking a GPU?

If you OC it way more and didn't monitor temps, then there maybe some problems.

But don't take tension. Use MSI Afterburner and Increase the clocks slowly.
And keep an eye on the Temps.

No need to OC that.
It will not give any Boost to your System.

As i said before in a different thread its a bit late to get the 600 series due to the 700 will be out i would be patient and get the better card instead of buying one now and seeing how the new card is going to be then getting that one. I bought the 660 TI and honestly its a great card but i do wanna see way better specs on the 700 series so lets see how that plays out
December 24, 2012 11:30:05 PM

Is there an expected time for the 700 series to be released?
a b U Graphics card
December 25, 2012 12:05:29 AM

It will release after Radeons.
Its probably around Q3

As you know, GTX 660 & GTX 650 Ti released in October. So, maybe some cards will release later.
The first card will be GTX 780. As happened this year.
December 25, 2012 12:52:39 AM

Wait, so they don't release all their cards at once? Also, when is AMD scheduled to release its new cards?
a b U Graphics card
December 25, 2012 12:55:07 AM

AMD announced that they'll release their cards in Q2.

Sorry they don't release them all at once.

Yea i agree i think the higher end cards will drop first then the mid later on.Like the 690 680 670s came out early and hopefully the same pattern repeats cant wait to get my hands on a 770
December 25, 2012 6:24:38 PM

Is the 670 considered mid range or high end? What about the 660 ti? Also, would these cards be able to play far cry 3 at max settings?
a b U Graphics card
December 26, 2012 1:22:41 AM

GTX 670 is between of both High-end and Mid-end.
Very good for 1080p
It will max out the game

GTX 660 Ti will also max out the Game with more than 30fps.
December 26, 2012 3:27:05 AM

So is it not worth the extra money for the 670?
a b U Graphics card
December 26, 2012 5:06:23 AM

GTX 670 is the best card for the Price.
Its totally worth the price.
a b U Graphics card
December 26, 2012 5:08:38 AM

it is worth the extra money for 670. however 660ti is not worth extra money over 660.
so go with either 660 or 670

I honestly dont think its worth getting a 670 now we about to approach the gtx 700 series and for the price of the 670 you can get a 770 maybe a few bucks more but just my opinion..Crysis 3 and others is coming out and i honestly think its going to take that type of a card to run it smooth not saying the 670 would because it will but from what im seeing graphically eh ima go for the 700
December 26, 2012 4:37:24 PM

Yeah I'm starting to think that too cause I really want to be able to play Rome 2 and based on the gameplay footage it looks like it is gonna take a really good GPU.

+1. Of the current cards, GTX660 and GTX670 are the best choices.

+1. This is what I'm doing. I'd grab a GTX670 if I was buying now, but we're so close to GTX770 I'm gonna wait. It might only be 15% faster, but it might be 50% faster. I reckon somewhere in the middle.
December 26, 2012 5:34:41 PM

The GTX770 is probbably gonna be released in Q3 right?
a b U Graphics card
December 26, 2012 5:36:01 PM

Nah Q2. Q3 will be the GTX760, GTX760Ti, GTX750 etc. No guarantees of course, but it's likely the same kind of release schedule as this year and last year.

This sounds about right..Same as 600 series..The gtx 660ti came out in aug.. So i pretty much think also the 770 would drop q2
December 26, 2012 8:32:08 PM

Yeah I think I'm gonna wait for the new nvidia cards and intel CPUS to come out.

Sounds wise :-) After Piledriver, Intel may make more of an effort with this new range!
December 27, 2012 12:25:32 AM

Do any of you guys know if the total war series like Shogun 2 is more CPU needing or GPU?

rts games usually use a good ammount of cpu for calculation but use the gpu as well, id say its a combination of both tbh.

Nice..Im waiting for the GTX 770 and ima get the next gen intel cpus to go along with it..Ivy bridge is kewl to but i have a i5 2500k to hold me over and my gpu is a 660ti which would hold me but i wanna go a step up with the 770
