My cousin gave me several hand me down parts after his motherboard developed BIOS problems and he moved on to a new PC.

Everythings piled into an old cooler master case, I believe.

Flip power switch, power button on MOBO lights up orange.

Push power button. All fans start to spin.

Keyboard lights light up, motherboard boot screen appears.

It initializes the BIOS, asks me to press [ctrl]+[m] to access the BIOS or [space] to continue.

When it continues it asks me to press any key to access the boot menu.

It can't detect any bootable devices.

Then it shuts itself down and the power light on the mobo's power button no longer lights up.

I accessed the BIOS menu, but it doesn't detect the DVD drive, only the SSD. I tried moving about in the BIOS menu, but then after about 30 seconds it powered itself off again and the orange light on the mobo power button did not come on.

SATA 1~6 (3Gb/s) supported by Intel ICH10R (currently hooked up to DVD drive with red SATA cable)
SATA 7/8 (6GB/s) supported by Marvell SE9128 (currently hooked up to SSD with white 6GB cable)
SATA9 (3Gb/s) supported by JMicron JMB362 (Tried DVD drive with red SATA cable)

So, what do I do? It boots, doesn't detect the DVD drive, and it turns itself completely off after less than a minute.

I'll try the DVD drive in a few more SATA ports and cables, but it's time consuming because I have to pull out the graphics card to get to it.

UPDATE: After the BIOS finishes it arrives at the screen that asks me to press any key to access the boot menu. Doing so gives me the option of selecting the CD/DVD drive to boot from!

I selected it and it said no bootable devices detected. Then I am returned to boot menu. I tried the same thing again to no avail.

After that it powered off by itself and turned off all lights again. Is it overheating somehow? Does that mean I should try reseating the CPU/Heat sink fan?

EDIT: Yes, the problem was the heat sink fan. One of the mounts was broken so it was hanging loose of the CPU. It overheated easily and turned itself off.

It may have lost the bios settings. If it has a back-up bios then you need to merely restore it. If it doesn't then it could be more useful as a door-stop than a computer. Find the manual and look up how to restore the factory settings. (There may be a jumper involved, if the factory settings are still accessible.)

I poked around in the BIOS menu and found "LOAD OPTIMAL SETTINGS" which loads the manufacturers BIOS settings.

This didn't seem to do very much and the computer still shut itself down in less than a minute.

Checking the website there seems to be a way to flash a different BIOS from USB. There are 3 BIOS updates available to me, and it looks like the original BIOS is not an option for me to download.

I'm about to clear out a USB flash drive to extract the BIOS update to so that I can update/flash the computer's BIOS. Hopefully it won't automatically shut down on me during the middle of the update...

UPDATE: It stays on now!

The ATX 8-pin Power connector orginally had 4 of it's pins covered up by a piece of plastic. I removed this so I could use all 8 pins.

I unplugged the cable going into the 4 pins that were originally covered and now no longer have a problem.

I'm still having trouble making it find a bootable device, but I think I'm no longer having hardware issues.

If you're reading this in the future, TRY USING ONLY 4 OF THE 8 ATX (CPU) POWER CONNECTIONS!

UPDATE UPDATE: It started shutting down again. I gave the Heat Sink Fan (HSF) a poke and it was loose and dangly on one side. I'll have to get a new one. When I removed it I saw that the thermal paste had spread off the copper portion of the HSF, so not only was the HSF unable to securely attach itself, I had used too much thermal paste!
