Maybe because they also see a ton of red in that area? Odds are you
wouldn't have survived the enemy. If you see an arty symbol, BUG OUT. That
means you're about to get overrun.
OTOH, if you see a UAV, that usually means get your ass over there and help
clean out the few enemy so that the flag will turn.

Well, when I play commander, I make sure I warn all the squads
first...(Right click on the squad no...and theres little menu
saying..'move artillery'), but as for the lone wolves out
there...they're buggered, as you can't tell them anything. Well, except
in the little chat box, but hey, who's got time for that ?
Another good reason to get yerself into a squad !

Two reasons:
- Sometimes it is worth gambling that you can place a barrage close to
your troops without hitting them. And your own side gets a warning so
they have an opportunity to move back.
- There is a small timeperiod from calling the artillery, to the shots
actually lands (some 5-10 seconds I think). Players seem to be able to
run an amazing distance in that timeperiod, in order to move into the
target area ;-)

Yow, didn't think to right-click on the squad list. What other goodies are
in there? The thing I find most frustrating is that I can see any names
when I'm commander, except on the score screen. I might know who's playing
but I couldn't tell from looking at the kit lists.

Yep. And if you've just taken a flag, it's amazing how many guys stand
around in a tight cluster figuring out their next move, to be killed by the
enemy retaliatory strike. I just don't get guys who stand still. I
sometimes grab a ride from the next passing vehicle, who'll stop somewhere
and then get creamed. Standing still is certain death.

Run? Some even grab a Humvee to drive there - guess they really like
fireworks, huh? :-)

I rarely get to grab a jet or copter from the plane campers. My only
chance to fly is to be at ground zero. The other day I was blasted over
a couple of buildings and my corpse landed on a roof :-) It was quite a
ride!

We anxiously await the mapping tools. Then we can create the new Apache
Wars, where birds spawn at an alarming rate to satisfy the plane and
chopper whores. And those of us who love Stingers will have our "target-
rich environment"! Muahahaha!
My favorite flying is to grab a transport as squad leader to get deep
behind enemy lines and take a rear base. (Like the ThinkGeek.com t-shirt,
"Rogues do it from behind!" ) Look for me in squad "Penetrate".

Well, you can hope that I'm the enemy commander (nick is BOFH-de) -
plane- campers are my usual target for artillery practice when nothing
else needs a barrage :-)

I'll be the one holding a sign that says "Not a plane camper! Do not kill!"
If you don't see the sign then hopefully I'll still be able to use your
barrage to fly around a bit ;-)

Yep, always a good bet. Lob them a couple of artillery rounds, not even
their own team pities them ;-)

I really don't understand why everybody complains.
I play mostly as commander and don't hesitate to bomb an area if there are
more enemies than friendlies in that zone.
Friendlies see the arty icon, why don't they just step out for a bit?
Oh yes... for sure... newbies probably will not understand that icon, even
after they got killed a couple times.
What I know and that pisses me off, is that I got a lot of complains and
mutinies after providing an "arty support".

Yeah, I agree. Players should be ready to use a close barrage. I often
take the change and run towards the flags, while the last rounds are
falling. Great way of clearing and reaching a flag site. And it's mostly
easy to get out of the way, if you want to.
