Any suggestions on software to backup the address book on various GSM
phones, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, etc?
BT is preferred, but IR is ok. I know each one comes with their own
datasuite, but this doesn't always work with various implementations
of BT.
I have recently seen GSM Tool mentioned in another group, but the web
site doesn't reflect that version as being available and there is
mostly negative feedback on Palmgear.

Check out the available proprietary software for your phone.
I have a Siemens ME 45 backed up to Outlook using Siemens' free QuickSync
software, which is a plug-in to Outlook. Sync is by serial port to my PC, or
IR port in the case of my laptop. My Palm is also synched to Outlook so I
have consistency across PC, laptop, Palm and ME 45. It all works fine.
The address book on the ME 45 is sophisticated, allowing for multiple phone
numbers under individual entries. The above setup is the only one that I
found that would preserve that feature in transferring address books between
phone and computer. Prior to that, I had my Palm synched to Lotus Organiser,
and my phone then synched to my Palm...but only for one number per entry.
Messy and cumbersome. I way prefer Organiser over Outlook, but I will bear
with Outlook for the smooth system I have. Editing my address book on my PC
using the QuickSync plug-in to Outlook, and then putting the final version
back into the phone is a breeze.
In my researches I came across funBOOK. It looks useful for backing up
between Palm and phone, but will not handle multiple phone numbers.

That's the whole point, proprietary doesn't work. Nokia BT on a 6310i,
WON'T work with another vendors BT card, AFAIK. Nokia says "only
qualified for use with Nokia BT products"
Don't care about Outlook Sync for phone, just want to backup the
numbers in case the phones go dead. There are too many numbers to fit
on a SIM. I only Sync Outlook onto a Palm.
