Hi. I have a 3310 which has been working very nicely for a long time. The
battery still holds its charge very nicely, but whenever I make a call, the
phone switches itself off. It is as if I just pressed the on/off switch. It
doesn't happen at any other time other than about ten seconds into a call
(outgoing or incoming).

Anyone got ideas?

My guess would still be the battery. I think when they get old the
internal resistance goes up, so they can't supply enough current
for a call, especially if you're at a great distance from the tower.
You could first try just cleaning the battery contacts.

This problem only happens during a call, not a text message send/receive. I
would have thought it might happen then, too, if it was the battery.

Any idea on what to clean the contacts with?

Thanks for your help.

Battery has deformed internally.
What happens is the crystals inside the battery deform and grow slightly
with age, overlapping each other.
When you're in standby, it works quite well. But when you enter high-power
mode, making a call for example, the crystals are under massive load, they
then bridge arc, short-circuiting in your case, which the phone sees as
extremely low battery. So it dies. You can turn it straight back on, but the
same thing will happen time and time again.

When the phone is charging much the same thing happens, some of the crystals
are not being charged at all due to arcing between themselves.

Text messages will do the same thing as a call under extreme distance from a
tower or very low residual battery levels, when the phone is trying to drain
everything it's got.

You'll need a new one. Simple as that.

This has never happened while sending text messages, and I have sent some in
some very low signal areas! It only happens during a call.

When sending a text message, the phone is required to transmit for
only a very short time, maybe only a fraction of a second. Making
a voice call requires transmitting over the whole duration of the call.
