Hi everybody. I've been thinking about buying either the Pro1 or the
G6. I know the Pro1 is 8 mega pixel compared to the 7 mega pixel
resolution of the G6, and the Pro1 has that L series lens with a bigger
zoom range than the G6. Other than those two differences, are these
cameras basically in the same league? I already own a G3 -- LOVE IT,
but time to move on. Please, no SLR suggestions. I want what I have now
in the G3, but with more power.
THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Hi Hank,
i live in Friedrichshafen/Germany , own a G5 and think I like to upgrade
soon also. G3 an G5 are really good cameras, but I felt on my travel-trips,
I need some zoom range more.
The G6 is only a G5 with 1mio.px more and another face. How you said, the
Pro 1 is in another league. The L-lenses are really better and the
zoom-range is satisfying.
But you know, images made with the largest zoom range are often not sharp
because you was shaking.
I know, my next camera must have an image stabilizator, else you can forget
the large zoom. I don't like always to carry a tripod!
And so I look for the first reviews and pictures an experiences about the
new ( start in Germany in November) NIKON 8800. It has a 10 x zoom wit
stabilization. I wrote to CANON, if they would think about a similar camera,
but they wrote back the camera developement is in Japan and they have to
decide.
Perhaps I change from CANON to NIKON, but I will wait still 2-3 months.
Possibly CANON has an answer to the NIKONs 8800.

None of the Canon models offer image stabilization?

The S1 does. It is a nice camera, but is only has 3 megapixels of
resolution, and no RAW file output. None of the high-end Powershots offer
IS at the time of this writing.

Yeah the S1 IS is a cool cam -- but it would be a step down from what I
already have.

Panasonic FZ20 has 12X zoom, 5MP and image stabilisation....

Yup. There's another nice cam -- but I prefer to stick with Canon. I
already own a Canon external flash and a bunch of Compact Flash cards.
Moving to another brand would force me to spend considerable sum of cash
on new accessories. Besides, my current camera is 4 mega pixel --
jumping up to 5 would not be worth the upgrade. I use a tripod when I'm
worried about camera shake, and I wouldn't really need a 12X zoom for my
purposes.

And if it's as nice as the FZ-10 (looking at the enhancements they've
made to the Venus Engine it could be very good indeed) it should be a
very good camera - I've been very happy with my FZ-10.
(Although had there been a Canon that combined the lens and stabiliser
of the S1 IS and the sensor (and style!) of the G5, I think I know what
I would've bought

I've been a Nikon purchaser since starting with cameras back before 1970.
The 8800 would have been the obvious choice for a stabilised lens camera.
However, the maximum aperture at full zoom is only f/4.9 (IIRC) compared
to the f/2.8 of the Panasonic FZ20. The means you are throwing away a
stop and a half of light. The image stabiliser is gaining you 3 stops,
but you are then throwing away 1.5 stops of that gain by going to a
smaller lens. It's a little more complex than that because of the sensor
size and noise characteristics.
So it was looking like a lot more money for something that wasn't as good!
I would be interested in a real-world comparison, though, or someone to
convince me otherwise.

Yeah, but the range starts at 36mm (25mm equiv.) which would be too much
for me. When I bought my Powershot G5 early this year, there were no only
few ZLR's around with a zoom range down to 28mm. (AFAIR it was only a
Nikon Coolpix 5something that had other drawbacks.)
With respect to that I'd prefer the Pro1 although I'd miss the optical
viewfinder of my G5. I think I'll wait a little longer for the Pro1's
successor. :-)
