when I try to log on the internet, I get an error that says IP address un recognized. When I run the command to renew the IP address , it says that a socket error or something. can anyone assist?

You will need to provide some more information. How is your computer connected to the Internet, wired or wireless, through router or direct to cable/dsl model? Is this a new issue or are you trying to connect this computer for the first time? If you type ipconfig in the command prompt window does it respond with a gateway and ip or media disconnected?
