I'm looking at downsizing my computer again, this time going for an SG05 case - currently sizing up what components I can fit in there without the thing overheating and blowing up! I know I'm going to be waiting for haswell to hit before I buy my new CPU/MB but I thought I should start planning now - looking out for offers on other components, ect.
So this is how the build stands at the moment
Case: Silverstone SG05
PSU: Silverstone SFX 450w (comes with the case)
MB: Unknown LGA 1150
CPU: Intel 4670k or 4770k
RAM: 16GB DDR3 Kingston HyperX (already using it in my current PC - may as well keep it)
GPU: Something around the performance of the GTX 660ti
Storage: internal SSD (already bought) + HDD (possibly external)
My main queries are:
1. *What's the best GPU I'm going to be able to get in this case? The Silverstone website states 9" as the maximum GPU length but I've seen examples of people using 10"+ cards in their SG05 cases, mostly due to some GPU's having their PCI-E power connections on top of the card instead of behind it. I'm also a bit worried about heat so will likely be looking for something with a TDP of around the same as the 660ti (150w). Are there any non-reference 660ti cards out there with a shorter PCB with the power connectors on the top of the card?)
2. The SG05 has space for 1x 3.5" drive and 1x 2.5" drive. This is fine as an SSD/HDD setup is likely what I'll want to go for but I've noticed that the 3.5" bay blocks a lot of the front 120mm fan that the case relies on to keep components cool so I was thinking about removing the 3.5" bay to allow for better airflow. This leaves the problem that I now have nowhere to store my data other than my SSD (which is restricting in that i don't want to be paying over the odds for a new 512GB SSD).
*How much of a perfrmance drop (if any) would I see if I were to use a USB 3.0 hard drive instead of an internal SATA drive? This would be for storing data on (i.e game installs that won't fit on the SSD)
This is more of a challenge to myself more than anything, I want a small PC just for the sake of having a small PC.
I'm from the UK so of course if you're suggesting parts it has to be sourceable from in the country.
