Hello....I am building a new box used primarily with 2-D apps and maybe rarely even (1) 3-D game, rarely. Need max speed and max stability for these 2-D. Would you suggest NVIDIA or Matrox or ? Want a name brand so can get driver updates for awhile. Plese name cards if you can. Thanks.

Matrox G400Max is the best you can get.
Then a Matrox G550

Hmm, the G550 performs about as well as a G400Max but has more features.

For 2D I think all Matrox card are about the same. My cousin replaced his Matrox G200 with G450. We cannot notice any difference in 2D image quality. His monitor is SONY G400.

I can tell you that the worst for 2D quality is the nVidia line of gForce cards. A Matrox or ATI card will do you fine, but ATI is known for bad drivers (except for the current radeon 7500's and 8500's, where it looks like they are finally starting to make an effort). Besides, I thing the Matrox cards are cheeper.

Only don't try to do Professional Video editing with the 8500.
The hardware OverLay don't exist.
With the 7500 it work up to Dual 1024.

Who said that? As long as you have the 3286 drivers, you're ok with video overlay.
