1440p worth it?

Last response: in Graphics & Displays

So I got some money for xmas and am thinking of upgrading to this from my (now very dated) 27" 1920x1200 monitor.

Do you guys think the jump up in resolution is worth the sacrifices in MSAA and other graphical settings that will need to be made in order to achieve 60fps at the higher resolution?

It will be at least a couple years before I can upgrade my graphics hardware, and I'm worried that if I jump up to 1440p gaming, even a pair of 7970s won't be able to game at very high settings for long - already games like Far Cry 3 and Hitman: Absolution would need MSAA turned down or off and I shudder to think what Crysis 3 or Unreal-Engine 4 games might need to hit 60fps at that res.

More about : 1440p worth

It depends on your personal preference. Your system wouldn't have much of a problem running games at that resolution, even with the settings ramped.

It would look much better, especially since (I'm assuming) the monitor would most likely be IPS.

Did you have a particular monitor in mind?

Im pretty sure at that resolution, you wont need things like AA.

FXAA/MLAA does the job extremely well at high-res. And according to TechReport's more recent GPU reviews, there isn't as much of a drop in performance from 1080p to 1440p as you would think. Even with MSAA and Ultra settings in the newest games, you're looking at an average of 45fps at minimum with one HD 7970. When you get your second, you're golden.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I'm thinking of getting the Auria 27" 1440p IPS monitor that Microcenter sells:
http://www.microcenter.com/product/384780/EQ276W_27_IPS...

Sounds like it's more or less the same panel as the Catleaps etc have, but it's from a store I trust, has all the inputs I need, and has HDCP support which I need for my Xbox and Blu-Ray.

It sounds like it would be worth doing... I'm sure that a pair of overclocked 7970s will be able to handle games at that res without AA for a while, I just am a little nervous about it since I've never actually seen a 1440p display in action for gaming and don't know how big an improvement it is. I do know that it would make work a lot easier when I'm working at home, though... I can make 2 windows side by side work on my 1920x1200 monitor but it would be a LOT better on 2560x1440.

If I didn't get that Auria monitor, I guess I'd either look for a 27" 1080p IPS monitor or a 27" 1080p 120 Hz monitor, but I'm not willing to spend more than $400 in any circumstance so I think the 120 Hz screens are out of my budget (not that I care much).

Yeah I've heard that HP is the best IPS gaming monitor, but I'm not super picky about it - I don't really play any multiplayer games (don't have time) so I just stick to single player stuff. And I almost always play with my controller, so things like response time and input lag aren't as important to me as they are to many PC gamers. Those are the main drawbacks to the other monitors, right?

I'm just flat out unwilling to spend more than $400 on a PC monitor, on principle, when mid-high quality 40"+ HDTV panels start around the $500-600 mark.

All I have to say is WOW... the 1440p IPS display doesn't disappoint at all. I had no idea colors could pop like this on a monitor!!! The 27" Auria monitor is an absolute steal at $400 and I can't believe it took me so long to purchase one... it's gorgeous. Was watching netflix on my Xbox 360 with my wife and even she noticed the difference!

Also, Far Cry 3 @ 1440p @ 60fps constant maxed out with 4xMSAA... *drools*...

Can't believe I doubted the upgrade would be worth it. This is up there with the best upgrades I've ever made and I don't think I could ever go back to a TN panel again :bounce:
