GTX 690 (ASUS) vs HD 7990 (VTX3D) Need help deciding???

Hi guys,

I would really like some advice on which card to buy for my new build. I would be play games such as: Skyrim+Mods, Assassins Creed 3, Far Cry 3, DayZ, Hitman Absolution etc.. Could you guys please share any reviews or feedback you have on these 2 cards and of course what would you choose??? Both cards are amazing and both have pros and cons, which is why I really can't decide :??:
I know a lot of you will say 2x 670's, 680's or 7970's are better and cheaper but I don't think 2 cards in SLI or CrossFire would be good for me, as for one I have NO experience with SLI or CrossFire and heat might be a problem.

Pros: More tried and tested than the 7990. Less power consumption. Smaller. Quieter.
Cons: Outperformed in most Benchmarks by the 7990 (Except for PhyX games). Runs hotter and vents into case.

Pros: Outperforms the 690 in most Benchmarks (Except for PhyX games). Cooler. £50 Cheaper.
Cons: A lot louder. More power consuming. Very large and bulky.

My system will be:
i5 3570k with some overclocking, or I might go for the i7 3770k not decided on that either yet lol.
ASUS Z77 Sabertooth MoBo
800/850w PSU
Corsair Carbide 300R case with a few extra fans.

So has anyone got any experience with either of these cards??? Really need some advice.

Thanks, I did have a really good read through that before I opened this thread but to be honest it confused me even more lol. The 7990 is cheaper and outperforms the 690 in a lot of games but then the 690 outperforms the 7990 in others and PhysX games of course.
Arhh it's a tough call :??:

Yeah I had set on the 690 but then I saw the benchmarks for the 7990.
Also may I ask your opinion on a couple of other things, one being the 3570k and 3770k. As I would be OC'ing to somewhere around 4.4Ghz or above, would the 3770k make any difference in gaming performance or would it only make a difference in thing like video editing???
The second thing is the motherboard, would something like a ASRock Extreme4 bottleneck a GTX 690 or should I go for a better board like the Sabertooth??? I only ask as I need to cut a few pennies here and there but without damaging the performance, so I can get a 120hz monitor.

i7-3770k is faster, but that depends on how much you want save. In gaming not much, video editing... mind as well get a R7970 ghz/ GTX 680 and use the extra money to get a core i7 extreme edition.

If the video software is opencl accelerated, then radeon hd 7990 would absolutely thrash GTX 690, and i7. Nvidia placed an artificial cap on kepler's compute performance and as a result one hd 7970=gtx 690.


Its only 70 W difference, don't be daunted by power considering that both consumes 300W+ underload. If you can afford a $1000 graphic card you obvious don't care about power use.

HD 7990 is cooler than GTX 690, so you don't have to worry about that

Microstuttering is even less with radeon pro.

I've been reading up and i think the 3570k will be the way to go for me as it will only be used for gaming so the HT is wasted on me.
As for the MoBo, i still think for the money the Sabertooth is the best deal. Although I am still open to suggestions.
