I was wondering if all of these components would work together in a build. If I am missing something or if there are any suggestions a reply would be helpful. I am mainly going to use this build for gaming, video editing, etc. I only have about $500-$600 to spend, and I know that it is not going to be a top of the line build.

- AMD FX-8350 or AMD Phenom II X4 Black Edition CPU
- ZOTAC GeForce GT 640 2GB Graphics Card
- Lite-On IHAS124-04 DVD Burner
- Western Digital Blue 1TB 3.5" Hard Drive
- OEM 700W ATX PSU
- MSI 970A-G46 Motherboard
- 2 x 4GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 RAM
- Thermaltake Commander Snow Edition

Solution
Well, you don't need a 700W PSU. The 640 is not good for gaming. There is a big leap from a Phenom to an 8350.

Here is what I suggest.

Better build as you are doing video editing.

just go ahead with 8gb of ram, drop the 1tb for gaming, get like two 320s and raid-0 them for better loads. Stick with the newer cpus, Even a six or four core is fine. and i agree a 7770 or 7850 would be better.

i just built a server for $280, 8GB ram fx-6100, 500GB HDD, hell for another $150 on a gpu it could be a gaming machine. well under $500

i have a 7870 in my desktop paired with 8GB ram and 3570k CPU Max settings on everything smooth.

I was gonna go with an AMD chip but the decent MOBOs were so high, that 3570k with a decent Intel MOBO was the way to go over a mid range AMD and an expensive AMD mobo.

Look around at the benchmarks, IVy and Sandy are the way to go for gaming right now

Right now, the OP can't afford a Sandy or Ivy with decent graphics. As camohanna said, more cores equals better video editing performance with matched performance of the g860 on gaming by going with the Phenom. They could always upgrade to a 6300 or 8350 later. No doubt, Intel is better, but for budget building, go with AMD. Two 320GB HDDs in RAID will cost more than a 500GB for just a bit more performance. Trust me, I have two 1TB in RAID0 and it isn't all that much of a difference. Just waiting for my older HDD to crash and forget RAID.

Exactly.
