Problem with halo trial

I have read all the messages about this problem an tried everything on them,
but I still have a problem. I get that FATAL ERROR thing where it can't
enable direct 3D. Hardware accelleration is full, All the video tests in
DxDiag were fine, and I have directx 9c. I have a Benq fp757-12 LCD monitor.
it is running at 75 refresh rate. I have an Sapphire Ati Radeon 9600 atlantis
with 256 mb of ram. I have 768 mb of ram on my computer with a 3.00Ghz. this
is really annoying because I really want to try halo for PC because I want to
buy it.

PLEEEEEZE HELP!

Its a decent enough game and online its fun. Its an oldish game iam
sure you can get it cheap somewhere ?
