512MB of dedicated memory showing up as 256MB

So I have built my computer a little under a year ago, and just recently I have noticed a bit more lag and studders in my games lately, so I checked some things and happened to notice AMD Engine Control Center said I only had 256MB of dedicated memory for my integrated Radeon HD 6550D, when I clearly remember it saying 512MB not that long before. Can anyone help or explain why this happened? thanks.
