New comp wont post or make sounds

I've just barely managed to put together a computer, and it turns out to be a heaping scrap of failure...My parts are all new, no reason to suspect faultiness (though one of them might be the culprit). The first time i boot it on, I actually manage to get a screen on my monitor, asking me to press F1 to reconfigure my harddrive's settings (the harddrive was a gift). So I plug in my keyboard, and to my dismay, pressing keys did nothing, while the screen remained there. I unplug my mouse and keyboard a few times, to no avail. Finally, I turn off my processor with the power button, and turn it on again, and my monitor suddenly can't find a signal...and i've checked and rechecked my plugs to see if everything's in order, took out each stick of ram individually and tried to see if one was faulty, all to no success (no signal from monitor). Can anyone think of a reason why my computer would behave this way?
