I am running 2 x ATI 4870/ 1gb DDR5 each right now and have avoided upgrading them as much as possible.

If I where to upgrade to 2x 7870's, 2x 7970's or wait for the 8000 series to start coming out in 3-6 months, will I notice a big difference in performance over what I am running now? (basically would it be worth the upgrade.

A SINGLE 7850 would be enough to beat your crossfire 4870's.

+1 to Max.

While a single 7850 would beat your current setup it wouldn't be by much, so you wouldn't notice a difference. If you want to upgrade right now and are willing to shell out that kind of money (CF 7970's) I would suggest SLI 2 GTX 670, they perform nearly the same as the 7970 (better in some games) and they cost less. They can also be easily OC'd to outperform the 7970's.... unless you are hardcore AMD. But really it is overkill unless you are doing multi-monitor or 3D. But yes, Any single newer card will outperform CF 4870.

Unfortunately I got caught up in that Nvidia GPU calculation thing 10 or so years ago where they got sued for selling GPU's with that flaw knowingly and would not admit to the issue for something like 3 years and I have no respect for Nvidia any more. They lost a customer for life on that one. So Nvidia is not even on the table as an upgrade and never will be.

A single card would be nice, but I am running 4x 24 inch LCD's and want to add 2 more..... not looking at it for a crossfire setup. I am looking for performance and screen real estate :-)

So I need to go with at least 2 cards.

Heheh, yeah either of the options 7870's/7970's would offer you incredible increases was what I was trying to say.

I suggest 7950's for price/performance.
