Hello
I am an electronics engineering student. I need a laptop for my college work. Most of my work will be based on MATLAB SIMULINK, Xilinx and some similar virtualisation softwares (Not VMware). I am not a heavy gamer and neither do I engage myself in heavy graphics work.
I would require some help on deciding which config (esp the CPU) to go for.

Would i5 (3rd Gen) with 8GB RAM serve my purpose or should I go for an i7 (3rd Gen) with 8 GB RAM?

Would i7 be an overkill?

Thank you.

If the programs you will use can utilise hyper threading, go with the i7... On the other hand... I doubt they do... so the i5 would be a better choice... Try find out if the can utilise HT so you can make your mind, if they do, you will see a big difference between the i7 and the i5
