connecting large screen monitor

Hello,
I am trying to connect a large screen monitor to my Dell laptop on xp. the monitor displays the desktop background but no icons.the mouse pointer moves off the bottom of the laptop & on to the top of the large screen but nothing else shows. The display on the large screen is slightly too big for the screen although the highest res is selected. nvidia fxgo5200
