Hi,

I am looking to upgrade my video card and I need some help. I have a Dell XPS 8300, Intel i7-2600 CPU , 8GB RAM, and the stock 460W Dell power supply. My budget is about $250. The current card installed is an NVIDIA GTX 550ti I am considering the following cards;

VisionTek 900568 Radeon HD 7850
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

GIGABYTE GV-R787OC-2GD Radeon HD 7870
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

My question is, are these cards a significant improvement over my current hardware? Also will I need to upgrade my power supply to install either card? Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

They are 4+ tiers above your card on toms hierarchy chart found here: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-car...

I would honestly replace that PSU as its most likely garbage, although they cards don't require a high wattage PSU, a good antec 450 should do you fine.

Currently the 7870 is arguably the best price/performance card out right now.

The 7850 is about twice as fast as the 550i and the 7870 moreso...

So yeah... worth an upgrade for sure. I'd probably stick to a 7850 on a Dell 460W PSU... and even that might be a bit of a stretch.

I'd recommend bumping up to this PSU + a 7850... should be able to get both for around $250:

Dude get new psu.get atleast corsair,antec,seasonic 600w psu which may help you in future for more upgrades. So get hd 7850 + good 600w psu.

Thanks for the info, I am willing to spend extra to get the 7870 and a new power supply would the extra performance be worth it or should I stick to the 7850?

Thanks again.

Did you end up getting the 7850? I have a Dell XPS 8300 and can't get mine to work. I thought it was the card so returned it but the same thing is happening with the new one. I doubt that I have received two dead cards so there seems to be a compatibility issue, but I'm yet to work out if that's the case.

I'd love to know if you had success with a 7850 in a Dell XPS 8300?
