GPU is ATI Radeon HD 4670,
OS Windows 7
Motherboard: Acer EM61SM/EM61PM

IMPORTANT UPDATE: GPU works fine even on higher game settings in my brother's computer

I have had this frustrating problem for a while now and after countless weeks of troubleshootig and internet surfing similar people problems and fixes Im still having this problem.

Basically my computer freezes while running certain games (Starcraft 2 and Heroes of Newerth to be specific) yet runs Diablo 3 flawlessly with no problems.

The freezes usually happen like this : randomly screen freezes for a handful of seconds > screen goes black for handful of seconds > game resumes were it left off. The longer the game survives without crashing the more consistent the freeze ups happen to the point were it will just spam freeze over and over and eventually just a permanent black screen forcing me to reboot computer.

On other less frequent occasions the screen will suddenly just die, sometimes goes straight black and sometimes goes black/gray stripes, green stripes even orange stripes once in these cases the keyboard does not respond and I have to hold the power button and reboot.

The audio still plays normally while the freeze ups happen, only once did I hear sound hiccups. Keyboard is also responsive during (caps lock light works on and off etc). However when the entire computer freezes the keyboard is no longer responsive, audio is gone and ctrl+alt+delete wont work.

I've tried very very many different things to try and fix this and so far nothing has
I've updated all drivers including display drivers, mobo drivers, audio drivers etc
I've fully uninstalled and removed all ATI for a clean reinstall.
I ran the memory check with 0 issues found.
I scanned for hard disk errors with 0 issues found.
Did a clean install Windows 7+reformat
Cleaned computer of dust etc (Diablo works fine when GPU is at 90c, SC dosnt get that high ever and crashes still)

Before I reformatted my computer after the lock ups that didnt perma freeze computer I would get a "Display driver AMD has stopped responding and has recovered" error message at the bottom left of my screen however after the reformat I'm not given any error messages at all.

I've only had this video card for 2.5 or so years now so I don't believe its on the way out since it runs Diablo 3 perfectly fine.

All graphic settings in SC2 are set to low as well.

If anyone has any remedies or suggestions to fix this problem I would GREATLY appreciate it, thanks for your time.

Some games crash at specific locations on specific cards(specially the old cards). Try to disable AA on the games. Worked for me on black ops 2. Your card is slow but since you are gaming with low settings that shouldnot be a problem.

As i said in my post, During Starcraft 2 my GPU goes no higher than 72c and is the one crashing. Diablo on the other hand that goes a little over 70c. Its also not in specific areas that the game locks up it just randomly happens during game play whether its 3 minutes into a match or 10.

Also an update: Me and my brother swapped video cards. Mine worked fine in his with 0 crashes AND he ran it on high settings compared to my low settings. His card that I used was a Radeon x1600. I ran starcraft for around 10 minutes and then suddenly my monitor went into standby and my keyboard and mouse acted as if they wernt connected so I rebooted and the monitor was still stuck on standby. Rebooted again and it worked fine for a little while and then the screen went to standby again.

And heres my dxdiag information incase it's of use to anybody.

So anyhow, what motherboard is it? Just tell me in 5000 words or less...

You should have listed all your hardware! Always list the hardware!
But, the basic thing is:
One thing is to make sure that the priority of the task is highest; there maybe other processes running that have priority over the task.
Including for instance security programs and antivirus. The latest of which have gaming / media modes.
If there is not a gaming / media mode on the security try turning it OFF. Now test it with the security turned off. Multiple mismatched security programs can cause conflicts.
“Free” security downloaded from the internet can cause lots of problems…
If you install “free” security from the internet, or downloaded multiple “free” tools and security, expect very poor performance! These types of downloads are just a load of junk. AVOID AVOID AVOID!
There is NO “free” tool that you need, to make windows run correctly. These “free” tools are a scam.

Another good thing is to eliminate as many unused / junk / UN-needed applications.
Try to get rid of resource hog, un needed / unnecessary applications.
turn off the screen saver
Go into the power profiles,
set standby, hibernate and sleep to OFF
leave the monitor standby ON, that's OK (maybe not, try OFF)
Set the Hard Drive standby to NEVER
Set system Performance to MAXIMUM, not "quiet mode."

Open the bios set up and make sure "cool and quiet" is OFF. (AMD)
There may be a performance setting in the bios setup you have...make sure it's cranked up to max.
in the bios, see that the allocation for video, if available, is maxed.

Now open the hardware manager profiles...
click start
click computer
click system properties
click device manager
double click on mice and other pointing devices
right click on HID compliant mouse
left click on properties
click on the power management tab
UN-check the box that says: "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." (there is now NO check mark in this box)
click OK

Now repeat this procedure for all mice, monitors, keyboards, and ALL USB ports on the device manager list.

You must open ALL the devices one at a time, as above, and turn off the power saver, for each device.

My motherboard is an Acer EM61SM/EM61PM.

Since I did a reformat I have very little programs installed atm. Only antivirus software I have is Microsoft Security Essentials.

All "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" are already unchecked.

Screensaver is off, cant find were to turn off standby, hibernate, sleep or hard drive standby as well as system performance. Also don't know how to open the bios setup.

The power profiles is where you can set the hibernate, standby, drive , etc...
Bios set up:
The manual for the motherboard shows how to get into the bios set up. This is different, according to the manufacturer.
Download the entire manual from the manufacturers website. Find out how to open the bios setup.
Turn off the "cool and quiet" in the bios set up. Exit and save changes.
The cool and quiet has caused nothing but problems. Turn it OFF.

Also just an update, I tried putting in a different video card (Radeon x1600) and from the second I turn my computer on my screen is in standby mode. The keyboard and mouse have their lights on and toggling caps lock on and off works but my screens light flashes on and off as if its in standby mode.

Also heres a link to my computer specs
