When I try to download the updates they don't even start downloading. Windows gives me two error codes: 80070017 and 800B0100.

I have already tried a microsoft update standalone package but that only seems to have installed one item. Please help.

The best way is to install them individually ---though it will take time. Copy the last numbers in bracket eg (KB2588516) and type in Google. You will get the direct download link from Microsoft.

I've had a similar issue previously.

All I did was just forget it....and about a week or 2 later, the updates seem to have magically installed. This happened to me with Windows 7 SP1 when it first came out.

I have tried checking the boxes individually, but I like this idea more. I will let you know if this worked.

When I had this problem a while ago, I kept getting CAPI2 errors in the event log. This fixed it. have you checked your event log for errors?

Any update that I try to install manually gets the message "This update is not applicable to this computer." even though I downloaded the proper updates for my operating system.

Check if your system is 32 bit or 64.

Yes, if the event ID matches one of the two listed on that page. Just click the fixit button and if I remember correctly, it will download a small program to fix the issue.

Problem solved! Windows update is genuinely not working but I am able to install each update, manually and one at a time, from standalone packages from Microsoft. (They need to be x64, not x86. Stupid me :p )

This doesn't bother me terribly that I will need to install each new update like this since there are so few. Maybe one day Windows will decide to do it automatically again.
