Coil whine gtx 660 ti

So i heard a whining noise coming from computer and it appeared to be the graphics card. I got the replacement and it still made the noise. Then i thought that is was the motherboard so i replaced that as well now the noise continues. The noise only is present while i play games. Could it be that the power supply is the cause? (random thought i had is that there be something wrong with the pci connections of this power supply and that might be causing the card to whine)

More about coil whine
  1. Which Card Model you have?
Is anything touching the card in the case?

When you play games, its Fans run on 100%. That is making Noise.
  2. MSI power edition.
    no nothing is touching it.
    No they run at 40%.
  3. this is the original graphics card. the replacement one i got was the on that got to 85c and the fans sometimes ran at 100% noise was still present. Should i try for another replacement?
  4. Are your Fans touching the side Metal plates?
  5. Well normally places wont replace a card with coil whine but you can try. Explain that eventually it can lead to longer lasting damage and that you would like a replacement. It's worth a try. It all depends on how annoying it is and if its something you can drown out.

  6. No they are not.
  7. So is the coil whine definably the graphics card?
  8. Well what I would do MB is take your side panel off and listen for it and narrow it down. It may not be your card could be your power supply.
  9. Okay i did it is coming from the graphics card. Yeah i was wondering that ,but no noise comes from power supply. Can it be that the power delivery of the power supply might be causing the noise?
  10. No probably not. Normally its a loose coil that is vibrating. Depending on your power supply you won't hear anything my AX850's fan only turns on after a certain load.
  11. Do you think i should try to replace my power supply?
  12. No what power supply do you currently have it may help to have a good psu but I don't think it will effect whine. Look if the whine is coming from the graphics card its primary responsible.
  13. SilverStone 600W Single +12V Rail ATX 12V v2.3 80 Plus Certified Active PFC Power Supply ST60F-ES. Yeah it the graphics card only when i play games it starts whining.
  14. Yea your power supply is fine mb :) I'd argue with them that it will lead to long term damage to the card and you would like to have it replaced if it is something that bothers you.
  15. Okay i am try to get a replacement psu to see if that fixes it.Thank you for the help. I will update if the replacement fixes the noise.
  16. nono! your power supply is fine. I'm saying your graphics card you should replace because its the source of the whine.
  17. oh okay i misread wrong. i will replace it again. thank you.
  18. Yea! Attempt to like linus in that video I linked you said there is a possibility they will not.
  19. It's possible it's the psu you need to test the card in a friends rig or try another psu first if it's the card try and rma
  20. Well possibly likely not so much. I don't know how a power supply could cause the whine. Possibly irregularities in power.

When capacitors go bad they'll start to make a screaming noise. Which is bad. Transformers can cause more of a buzzing noise which is fine. Without to long of an electronics lesson the magnetism switches polarity in the transformer to cause it. Usually you need sharp ears to hear it (I hear my PSU buzz, but I can't hear it over the lights when they're on if you can believe that).

If the sounds always been there its usually fine, it's when it's a new sound that you should check it out more.
