After reading a few curses over the new format of the 500x series, I have a
question. The internals are the same, but Replay has changed the remote.
Is it possible to image a 5040 to the harddrive and allow the option of
selecing commericial advance when you start to watch a show?

I'll assume you meant to say change a 5500 series into a 5000 series to
regain Commercial Advance and Internet Sharing. A number of people claim
they've done it. Some claim it can be done with a few simple HTTP commands
sent to the 5500 box. Check out the conversations going on about that at:

Is the manual commercial advance not sufficient?

If you've ever used Commercial Advance (the patented automatic feature)
you'll never want to be without it. I've had it on VCR's (RCA &
Panasonic) for years and was thrilled to see it available on RTV. With
a VCR it would automatically FF through the spots but with RTV it just
keeps playing the program almost seamlessly. No reaching for the remote
or guesswork.
