My laptop is connected to a wireless connection which my my ipad can not connect to (service provider say it to old for ipad to connect to). Is it possible to use my laptop as a modem for my ipad to connect through?
To me that sounds silly -- AFAIK iPad and iPad2 work with 802.11 a/b/g/n, i.e. all wireless Wi-Fi protocols, although if you are using WEP security it can be a bit buggy.
It sounds like you just need to correctly configure the iPad wireless settings for you router gateway address and security passphrase, but you should insure that you are using the latest OS as some connectivity issues were fixed in latest OS version.
If you experience intermittent disconnects, your best bet might be to give the iPad a static address and in your router make that a reserved address in the DHCP service.
