SLI Config

Is it possible to run two GTX 690's and a GTX 680 in 3-way SLI? Bearing in mind the 690 is a dual-GPU card?

Also, what are the advantages to running this set-up with the water-cooled versions of these cards

No because two 690s is quad-SLI which is the max you can do

There are no advantages to quad-SLI outside of crazy e-peen benchmark scores

the gtx 690 is a dual 680

4 way sli is the maximum you can go with....that is 2 gtx690

5 & 6 way sli is yet to come

I hope 5-6 way SLI doesn't come. It's better for nvidia and everyone to make a much more powerful gpu every generation than to rely on multi-GPU solution which as we know, has more drawbacks than it's benefits.

but than again we did not have sli since stone age.
it was first started at around 1997-98 if I an not wrong
