What graphics card should I get?

Ok, so right now I have an asrock 970 extreme3, so it doesn't technically support sli, but some say its possible. However, my gtx 550 ti just died for no apparent reason after like 2 weeks, so I think that I'll go AMD this time around. What is a good graphics card for less than $250 that would do well in crossfire later down the road?
