What's the deal with 'ECC', why does it make RAM so much more expensive? what is it? what does it do? and is it worth forking out the extra for it?

It's alive!!! hahahahaha!!!

Go to crucial.com and read the FAQ. Basically, standard RAM does no Error Checking or Correction. On a heavily used database or application server or on a critical number crunching workstation (read CAD or Physics, etc.), random memory errors could cause huge problems. On a standard overclocked gaming workstation this provides no additional benifit (except in $$ to the memory manu's).

thanx for that, I plan to be using my machine mostly for programming assignment for uni, and I will b using 3DSMAX4 (I happened to *find* this during the course of random browsing  ), alot too. I will not be using it so much for games, maybe just 40% games. ur basically telling me that I shouln't be bothered paying the extra AU$80 for ECC if this is what I'll be using this thing for, right?

ECC is usually only important in mission and data-critical systems, so I wouldn't recommend it for your system. It'd slow it down a tad.

Hahaha, no problem. It gets slowed down a bit because it has to go through the "error correction" process.
