I'm totally green at this, but need a new computer. I fugure the best way is to make my own.
Can anyone recommend a fairly decent spec for graphic heavy 3d rendering packages? I Mean from chassis, to fans, to just about eveything. thats how little I know!!

give us your budget and we will made you a compatible parts list. does that include the monitor too?

Specifically which rendering packages will you be using, and any specific render engines withing those ?

These will make a difference - ie 3ds Max - mental ray uses CPU only, but iRay/VRay can use the GPU.

I just signed up on this board and was just going to ask a similar question until I found this post, so I'm all ears too :)

I won't hijack this thread and can start a new one if need be. I'm looking at $1500 CAD for a 3DS Max working with large assemblies & rendering along with video editing in After Effects CS6. I customized a Dell XPS 8500 for $1549 w/

- 3rd Gen i7-3770 processor (3.40 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.90 GHz)
- 16GB ram
- 2TB SATA drive
- 256GB SSD
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660

Is that high for what you get?
