Gateway mc7801 video controller

Something has happened to the video controller driver. When I let Windows search for it, the search lasts about half a second and Windows says it cannot find a suitable driver.

Went to Gateway support and for this laptop I see two VGA drivers - one for Intel and one for ATI. The ATI driver is a 115MB file, whereas the Intel is 36MB.

Device manager identifies the display adapter as Intel. But the video controller properties (which show up under "other" in Device Manager) does not identify the mfg of the video controller.

What say ye?
