Hey guys, my friend is making the switch from an x15 alienware (might be eveen smaller actually) to a desktop. He asked me to make a list of parts he'd need and I told him he wouldn't have to buy windows but the problem is that the product key on his laptop is kind of washed out. So he might have to buy it...which is 100$ less to work with.

I'll post the parts here and since I built PC about a year ago(i5, 6970) I haven't really been keeping up with new releases. I was making him a i5-2500k with 7870 build.

Motherboard:

Now he just needs a case. He wants to get this one but I really need second opinions on this build. Anything better that I could get cheaper, maybe even a NVidia? Any incompatibilities? I have no clue if the hardware will fit in that case so help me out guys, thanks. If someone could green light this build, it would help me out a lot!

It looks pretty good, but I would suggest getting an i5 3570k over the 2500k. It doesn't overclock as high, but its per-clock performance is higher. Also, if he plans to OC, you'll want to get an aftermarket cooler of some sort. Otherwise, just get a non-k model.

Just want to warn you: Even if you do manage to read the product key, it probably won't work on a new system. It's going to be an OEM license, and those are tied to the original motherboard they were installed on.

I know this works as I have done it with my dell Laptop. I just took the product code from it and installed the same version of windows 7 on my Desktop. It didn't come with all the bloatware either. As far as I'm concerned, when you buy a copy of windows, You're allowed to use the code three times. So I don't see why I would have to buy another CD when my other licence works just fine.
