January 11, 2013 11:16:37 PM

Hi. I thought I would share with you a recent support ticket I posted with XFX regarding the use of multiple monitors. Anyone looking for a bit of an explanation regarding active vs passive mini displayport adapters, there are some tips below.

My configuration: DD RADEON 7850 860M 2GB D5 2XmDP HDMI 2XDVI
XFX Model number: FX-785A-CDFC

[ 1/8/2013 5:39:10 AM] How do I get 3 displays working? I have two connected via DVI and a third Samsung LCD tv. I have the TV connected via HDMI and the two displays are Dell ST2420L connected via DVI cables.

[ 1/8/2013 5:40:26 AM] I have been told that I should be using Displayport for the third monitor. I have tried that using the Rocketfish RF-AP305 adapter but Catalyst Control Center still only lets me display at most 2 monitors at a time.

[ 1/8/2013 5:41:12 AM] Should I be using an active adapter for the Displayport (one that has USB power?)? Is the Rocketfish adapter I`m using an active adapter?

[KEVIN_C 1/8/2013 4:32:34 PM] Here is a list of amd approved active adapters, you will need one in order to use 3 or more monitors:

[ 1/8/2013 11:28:20 PM] So can I use the two DVI outputs on my card for the two computer monitors? And then use an approved adapter for output to a third screen via HDMI?

[KEVIN_C 1/9/2013 12:15:02 AM] Well not exactly because there are no `active` dp/minidp to hdmi adapters, all the active adapters are either to dvi or vga which means you will probably have to do 1 monitor on dvi, 1 monitor on hdmi, and the last monitor via adapter minidp to dvi active adapter.

[ 1/9/2013 2:13:26 AM] OK great. Which of the two DVI native adapters should I use on the card?

[ERIK_A 1/11/2013 10:52:49 PM] Hi Mayur, For a display running at 1920x1080 either DVI port would be fine, wouldnt be one prefered over the other. - Erik
