Dell XPS 630 Graphics Card Upgrades

Ok guys, first post so be gentle!

I have an older XPS 630 and I'm about to pull the trigger on building a new system. I wanted to get some opinions on how well I could run some newer games by just upgrading the video cards first though. I'm worried that the older processor won't keep up with a new card even if I get one. I also remember something being weird about the 630 board and it only being 8x instead of 16x (unless SLI?)?

Here is what I've got now:
XPS 630
Intel Core2 processorQ6600 (2.40Ghz,1066FSB) w/Quad Core Technology and 8MB cache
8GB RAM DDR2 800
Dual Geforce 9800GT in SLI
7200 RPM HDD

I've been able to run most games pretty good, but it's starting to show it's age now. Planetside 2 made it cry even on low. GW2 is playable, but a bit laggy.

I'm was thinking about trying out 2 GTX 650 1GB or maybe 1 GTX 660 2GB... $200ish range

Anyway, I would appreciate any input!

  1. Yeah, I'm looking to stay in the $200-250 range. I typically drop $1,200 on a new box every 5 years or so ($240/yr). So if I can get another year out of this XPS by upgrading the card, then it would definitely be cost effective.

    Thanks for the input!
  2. This post has some video links attached that helped out. I think it may be worth it to go with the graphics upgrade for another year or so.
  3. Do 1 GTX 660 and get another in a year when you buy the new box so you'll be at GTX 680 speeds. Win/win.
