Hello,

I have a stock of Soshin 2J224K caps. They were in a bin marked 600 volt,
but I have no way to confirm. I also have no idea what value these are
(.22, .47uf)? Please post back if you can clue me into what value these are?

Thanks,
Kelly

Hook 'em up to 600V. If they don't smoke, they're OK. ;-)

.22uF. "224" is capacitor-speak; it works like this:

The first two digits are the value, and the last digit is
the multiplier. (22 followed by four zeros, in this case.)
The result is in pF. Move the decimal point six places
to the left to get uF.

The 224 indicates 22 with 4 zeroes in pF, so 220 nF or .22 uF.
Voltage can be determined by size, with caution.
A cap of 220 nF 600 V would be about 6 x 3 cm.
Sometimes it helps to compare size with caps of known value and
voltage and the same dielectric.

Scott, re your capacitors.. they should be .22uf.

The formalism with the part # is as follows:
221K = 220uf
222K = 22uf
223K = 2.2uf
224K = .22uf
225K = .022uf
226K = .0022uf and on

also the other question re caps in parallel. the voltage rating of
the caps stays the same when in parallel and doubles when in
series. three in series triples and so on. warning though, with
series caps, leakage in one or more of the caps will skew the
overall voltage rating downward. and kaboom.

Gaaack, you went the wrong way.

221K = 220 pF (pico)
222K = 2200 pF or 0.0022 uF
223K = 22000 pF or 0.022 uF
224K = 220000 pF or 0.22 uF
225K = 2200000 pF or 2.2 uF
226K = 22000000 pF or 22 uF

Kelly:

You have been correctly shown that the 224 part of the nomenclature is 0.22
µf (22 followed by 4 zeros - pf.). The leading 2J and the K suffix indicate
the voltage and tolerance/stability. But, I can no longer find my magic
decoder ring, and I would be very suspicious of the voltage rating, as Japan
manufactured very few "high voltage" capacitors over 200V. 50V, 100V,and
200V are plentiful; 400V are rare and 600V difficult to find. As a guess, I
would suspect those are 200 volt jobs.
