Hello there,
1.
I think the best update you need is just like those guys mentioned.... HDD
With such system I would get 1TB HDD and 1 at least 128GB SSD (the SSD is optional but recommended)

2.
I do not think it is the time yet to upgrade your mobo and proc, X4 965 is still good for gaming. I would prefer to wait for Hasswell.
If you want still to upgrade your proc now, I would choose either FX8350 or i5 3570k. (3570k is better for gaming but slightly more expensive here where I live compared to FX8350)

3.
You might also want to upgrade your GPU.
I like HD7850 and HD7870 but your mobo is for SLI not for XFire.
Here I see that it is better to upgrade your proc and mobo first than the GPU.
2xGTX460 should still win against a...

Well now is clearly the time for a large HDD. They are only $80 for 1TB and if this is going to be your computer for a long time, you will clearly want to have the space.

But to tell you the truth, you may not really need to upgrade anything. The GPUs are very nice, you may want to upgrade to one GPU but that is stuff that isn't really needed.

2xGTX460 should still win against a single HD7850 but about equal to a single HD7870.
or
If you would like to upgrade the GPU now, I would suggest to get first a single HD7870 or higher and add another one later after you upgraded the mobo with XFire and the proc.

Maybe he could upgrade the GPU, however, if he isn't going to do completely hardcore gaming then he is perfectly fine.
