What wifi adapters will work for desktop windows xp

Hello,
i have a hp cpu and i want to use my Clear wfif to connect to the internet. I was told that I need an adapter for a CPU to use the Clear signal. I was told that the wifi is really for laptops with built in adapters that cpu's don't have. Please tell me the best adapter to use for my application.
