Desktop freezes when playing games

hi i need a solution to this problem, i just got a new GeForce Nvdia 9600 GT graphics card for my gateway desktop computer with windows 7 and its a 32 bit. When ever i click on a game my desktop just freezes and doesnt even open the game. When i was playing hitman absolution the gameplay was working fine but when i went back to the desktop the desktop froze. I really need a solution and if anyone can help me it would be gladly appreciated
