Computer tuns on then shuts off, help!

Motherboard : ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5N-D 1.XX

GPU : NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX/9800 GTX+

Processor :2.40 gigahertz Intel Core2 Quad --- Multi-core (4 total)

6 gigs of ram ( one is mismatched )

9800 gtx graphic card

500g hd

Computer turns on all fans and everything powers up , the display cranks on and it makes the Beep! like it has for 5 years then i go into setup because it's telling me that my fans are spinning at only 600RPM

then it just shuts off , before it was saying i have a USB current overload warning and it would shut off in 20 seconds

Unplug an extra usb hub that went away now it just shuts off over and over.

Anything that could cause this ?

I should note my cpu fan is lose some of the screws decided to break and it's not planted on the cpu

Your may have fried the CPU. IF the heatsink isn't FIRMLY mounted with correct thermal paste application it will overheat and fry in a matter of 1 or 2 minutes.

What is your PSU?

Not the best PSU but not the worst by far. Its probably ok. Borrow one to test.

Your CPU could be toast if the heatsink isn't properly mounted.

it had two screws on the bottom and the two on top broke when i started it back up , it fell so it was barely touching it at all, do they really fry that fast?

If i had a Q6600 what would i buy to replace it ? most are discontinued -=[

Yeah a CPU will fry in a minute or two with no heatsink.

Probably doesn't help that it was on nearly everyday for 5 years? lol

Anyway to test if the cpu is dead? that sounds stupid question

figured it out , the gpu is dead :[

And the heatsink broke , CPU is fine!!

Any recommendations for a heatsink (775)
