my friend gave me a $1350 budget to build him a gaming computer. he sent me a newegg shopping cart with something another friend picked out for him but it included a HDD (no SSD), didn't include the case, and the CPU (i7) he had picked out was out of stock/discontinued. anyway building off of that, this is what i came up with so far. it totals $1303, and i'm willing to change anything based on a good suggestion. want to know what you guys think.

thanks for your suggestions. this is more or less the final build. kept the same dirt cheap case, and got some fans. also the ram is a slightly diff part number, CMX8GX3M2A1600C9

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/I5We

all of that plus a super cheap case and some fans came to $1366 before $60 mail-in-rebates.

Bad idea. Super cheap cases on builds really just cheapens the entire thing. Xion, Xclio, Apevia, Raidmax, Coolmax, Diablotek - those are brands to avoid like the plague. Especially on a $1400 budget, you can get a much better case. You don't want to trust your new components to something that can fall apart very easily. You also don't need the H50 either - the Hyper 212 performs exactly the same for less money.

Try this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($229.99 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($29.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($134.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: OCZ Vertex 4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($129.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($79.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3GB Video Card ($269.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Corsair 300R ATX Mid Tower Case ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: SeaSonic S12II 520W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($74.64 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($21.98 @ Newegg)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($99.99 @ Newegg)

I think this is an awesome build, go with this if you can! The 3570k will give you that overclocking option when you finally decide that doing just a little overclocking will help your BF3 experience. Also the Video card option of the 7970 is probably better for you, but if you can't fit it in the budget I think the 7950 is an awesome backup.

Good luck!

On a $1400 budget I'd probably go with a GTX 670. The Radeon 7970 is nice - especially the GHz edition - but it's not cheap at all. But with the GTX you get the extra NVIDIA hardware acceleration functions. That helps in games like BF3 and Borderlands that take advantage of it.

Maybe try this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($229.99 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($29.99 @ Newegg)

Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($79.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 2GB Video Card ($369.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 w/Window (Titanium Grey) ATX Mid Tower Case ($143.98 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: PC Power & Cooling Silencer Mk II 750W 80 PLUS Silver Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($103.98 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($21.98 @ Newegg)

Case and power supply are two things you will reuse over and over so make sure you do not go cheap in this area. It's an extremely bad idea to suggest otherwise.

Oh and you could upgrade your RAM to 16GB for about the same price if you are looking to buy relatively soon. Here's the link:

16GB Corsair Vengence 2x8GB 1600 RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233246

Make sure to use the promo code: VMEPROMOMAR13

And if you want a full tower case that is really nice you can look at the Inwin Grone cases, they are only $100 on Newegg and are some of the coolest looking/ coolest temperature wise cases I've ever seen.

Good luck!

No need - RAM is not the place to spend excessively on a build, especially for games, the extra RAM will be sitting there going to waste.

Also for cases I'm not the biggest fan of In Win, if you have the money get a Define R4 or Switch 810.
