programming a Replay

has anyone figured out how to program a replay?
I mean actually program it with code,
not just select a show to record.

I'd love to tell it to 'never record' Teletubbies (for example),
or to list shows in the order in which they were recorded,
or to set bookmarks at certain points,
or to be able to delete certain sections of a recording,
or not to play audio when it starts recording something
when it's just sitting there,
or to change the default time it connects to the mother ship,
or to convert recordings to a lower quality (and size),
or at one time to select a few shows to play in order,
or to alert me that a show has shifted it's scheduled time,
etc. etc.

I'd love to get into the programming language
and program it just the way I want it.

Why are you recording Teletubbies when you don't want to?

Standard would be OK, without the A/V sync problems.

>or at one time to select a few shows to play in order,

After using the Replay for awhile, I find that I usually don't CARE
when a show comes on. I just watch it when I'm ready.

>etc. etc.
>

A few more desired changes:

Add a list of already-recorded shows, so as to be able to avoid
duplicates.

Make it resolve conflicts in theme channels between different Repaly
units.

Change search to allow EXCLUDING certain words, like to record
"enterprise" but not "free enterprise".

Make search like it used to be, where it would search for all words,
rather than exact phrase like it is now. Note that "sabrina witch"
used to find "Sabrina the teenage witch". Now it fails.

Allow remote creation and deletion of theme channels.

Make the "network meter" and other such displays more configurable
(such as horizontal, in lower-left corner).

Indicate progress of uploads in "internet show sharing".

Maybe they think that if you could, it would lead to a situation like
Windows 9x, where it crashes a lot.

Keyword searches -- they come back with many false hits that pop up every
few months. I get the same episode of Teletubbies every couple of months,
for example. Not only is it useless wear on the machine, but it makes
something I might have wanted 'roll off' the top of the list.

Yeah, those are some more good ideas.

Possible.
It would take more effort on their part to set it up to be programmable, but
the user community would doubtless provide huge amount of free programming
skills to perfecting the program. If it were that way I bet these features
we just talked about would already exist in, say, the "Mike Menard ReplayTV
plug-in."

You mean that you're automatically recording something that is not
'teletubbies', but contains a word or phrase that is sometimes in a
'teletubbies' episode (like if you search for "football" and it finds
"teletubbies: the football game")?

It would be an advantage to have better search flexability, but
there's a few things you can do:

Deselect the channel with 'teletubbies' on it (works if you don't want
to record anything on that channel).

You may also want to change your search string. Sometimes that avoids
the problem. For example, I've been recording "early edition" (the
fantasy about tomorrow's paper) and get too many unwanted news shows.
I improved that somewhat by changing the search to "kyle chandler" (an
actor in the show I want).

I had another with "enterprise". The Replay kept recording "black
enterprise report". I fixed that by having DVArchive
(http://www.dvarchive.org/) periodically deleting the unwanted show
(you could have it delete "teletubbies").

Yes, there would be a lot of add-ons to improve things.

I know, like I said you have to TELL it to record Teletubbies. It
doesn't record it on it's own.

All Relays list shows in the order they were recorded. If you have an
old model and select "preserve this show", it will save them in the
order you selected them.

So force a net connect at 4am OR put one of those $15 Radio Shack
gadgets on it so that if a phone is off-hook in the house it will not
get a dial tone, OR in the modem panel select "check for dialtone".

It's not. It's VXWorks.

Anything replay can be found on the replay forum at avsforums.com.
Nobody likes answering the same questions 50000 times when it's in the faq.

Almost no one uses keyword searches. You might have a keyword search
theme for "poker" for example but you would not use a keyword search
like "Law" to record "Law & Order" because you'd get a million hits. You
highlight "Law & Order" in the guide and "create theme channel". This
way you DON'T get SVU or Criminal Intent episodes.

How is it possible to have a "conflict" with different machines?

not necessary, see above.

It never searched for all words on a Replay. It's always been the exact
string.

Read what I said. Not a CONFLICT but a RESOLUTION of conflict. That.
is resolve the conflict by recording one thing on this Replay and the
other on a different Replay.

Maybe you didn't read that right. That is one of the features I wish
the Replay had.

It used to be 'all words'. Maybe you weren't using Replay then. I
actually had that theme channel I used in the example.

BTW I had (and still have) one of the first 2020 Replays (it came with
version 1 software).

Actually, it COULD record Teletubbies and you've never told it to. For
example, you put in a record for a specific keyword and it just happens it
will record "Teletubbies" because that keyword happens to be in the
description of Teletubbies. Now, if you wanted to scan for this keyword and
Teletubbies happens to be on tv 3 times a day, you're gonna run into a
problem.
I can see how this could be a useful feature, you tell it a show that it
will never record.

My replay lists shows in the alphabetically from the show name, they are
then shown in the order they were recorded.

Nice workarounds, but there should be some option to tell it when to dial
out, for example, 4-6am, 6-8am, 8-10am, etc. etc. Someone who works
different hours might not like being interrupted every night between 2am and
4am because it needs to make a connection. Even if you "FORCE" a net
connect during the day, it will attempt to dial again between 2am and 4am.
If you cancel it, it tries again within the next half hour or so. This
should be selectable.

If you set the Replay to search descriptions, as well as names. I
usually don't.

How about something like:

football .NOT. teletubbies

Using the NOT logical operator, the above search would record
"football greats" but not "teletubbies: watching football".

Is this somehow automatic? How are you getting the Replay to select
the show that was recorded first?

I think it won't interrupt if you're already on the phone.

Only within a single Replay channel, not the global list that seems to
imply.

Maybe on the older models (with old software). On the newer ones,
they're alphabetized.

If a phone on the same line is in use (off-hook), there won't be a
dial tone. No gadget needed.

Do you just like to be difficult?
'Periodically' means repeating something at some time interval.
That interval could be daily, weekly, monthly, every year....
If you love manaul labor so much why don't you just go back to a VCR?

Linux isn't a programming language, it is an operating system. TiVo
is built on Linux, ReplayTV varies - newer units are built in VxWorks
IIRC.

That's why there are more hacks for TiVo, VxWorks is a proprietary
embedded operating system.

Of course, that repeating is being done by a computer. I set up the
thing once.

I've been looking for the FAQs, Thanks.

Yeah, that would be a good feature!

I'm using a 2020 Replay. It displays the recorded shows in the Guide in
alphabetical order, and then the oldest recorded show first. For example,

8 Simple Rules --> Episode 3
--> Episode 4
Band of Brothers-> Episode 10
--> Episode 11
The Office ---> Episode 3

etc..etc..

No it won't interupt if your on the phone (it will pick up, then just hang
up), but it does interupt viewing. You get that annoying bottom bar that
says "Connecting to the Replay server in 200 seconds.." or something like
that. You cancel that, about 1/2 hour later it shows up again, and you
cancel that. If you're watching TV between 2am and 4am, expect to cancel
that at least three times.

Thanks... I finally got the FAQ pages to work... Seems they do not like
Fire Fox (my primary browser) Wonder if they would work in Mozilla

They do work with MSIE though.

Read a bunch and got most of the answers I'm looking for.

Now... If I could just get myreplaytv to work (I know what the problem
there is... COmpuer is kind of busy for hte next 20 minutes or so and
the request times out, this too shall pass)
!
