Hey, all

First post, trying to make it meaningful.

Anyway, as a recovering console gamer and having been away for a while from the goings-on in the PC building world, I am trying to put together a machine for my gaming needs. The budget target is around €1000, *not* including monitor, OS and accessories. I am expecting the build to last for about 18-24 months before switching out any parts.

The build I'm thinking about is here:
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor ($189.15 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($147.86 @ Newegg)
Memory: Kingston HyperX Grey 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($52.89 @ Amazon)
Storage: Crucial M4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($115.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($98.98 @ Outlet PC)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 670 2GB Video Card ($386.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Case: Zalman Z5 Plus ATX Mid Tower Case ($48.98 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Corsair CX 750W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply ($95.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $1136.82
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

A couple of notes on the build:
* I am not sure about the mobo. I am split between Gigabyte's GA-990XA-UD3 and GA-990FXA-D3, the difference of which in Estonia is about €5. Or should I perhaps spring for the GA-990FXA-UD3 or even something else?
* I have no idea which cooler to choose, the idea is to make the system as quiet as reasonably possible (without breaking the budget too much).
* Memory was chosen pretty randomly, maybe there's a better choice out there?

Any help with this is much appreciated. :)

On your budget there's no reason to go AMD especially if it's gaming you're going for, and there's no reason to get that cheap of a case. What is your budget and what store are you buying from? I can suggest a system if I knew that.

The PC is going to be bought in Estonia (http://www.arvutikeskus.ee/ resembles the general prices over here and has their page in English), so you could expect the prices to be a little higher than elsewhere.

As said, the budget is in the vicinity of €1000, no rebates.

Mainly price.
I do see that it's mostly on par with Intel's Core i5 3750K, yes, but that's why I'm asking. Naturally, if it makes sense, then basing the build off of Intel's offering would be the way to go.

Absolutely. Here's what I would suggest:

Case: Corsair 300R - 67,00 €
PSU: Corsair TX650 V2 - 83,00 €
Motherboard: Asrock Z77 Extreme 4 - 130,40 €
CPU: 3.4GHz Intel Core i5-3570K - 205,00 €
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo - 28,90 €
RAM: 8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport 2 x 4GB DDR3 1600 MHz 1.5V - 47,00 €
HD: 1TB Seagate Barracuda XT - 61,90 €
Optical: Samsung 24X DVD Burner - 13,90 €
Video Card: Gigabyte Windforce 3X Geforce GTX 670 - 365,00 €

Total: 1,001.70 €

With a GTX 670 and 3570K that will pretty much destroy any AMD rig you can put together.

Thanks so much for the suggestion.
A question to add, though:
* I'd like to have an SSD in the build in addition to the standard spinning drive (even if it means going over the planned budget) and originally I included a Crucial one -- what would you recommend?

you got 16gb of ram and 2tb and you look the price!in my opinion build the rig with 8gb and 1tb so to be in the budget with an intel!if the price is the big problem then just go for the 8350!

For some reason I am not really sure why I originally went for AMD -- when choosing the components I thought I saw the 3750K at a much higher price than it actually is (difference is actually at about €30), but it doesn't really matter. The current standing suggestion is probably better than anything that I would've put together.

You live and learn :)

The Crucial M4 is a solid choice. I'd also recommend the OCZ Vector, Samsung 840 Pro, Plextor M5S, the ADATA SXG9000, and the Mushkin Chronos (last two if available).
