I have a Core 2 duo processor E4500 which is 2.2 GHz and 800 FSB , on a Intel 945 GCNL mother board with a 2GB DDR2 RAM. I have also installed a Graphic card Nvidia GT 210 and the OS is Windows 8 pro. I wanted to have an up grade without having to change the mother board which has the old 775 CPU socket. Shall I go for the E7600 processor which available cheap second hand or a compatible AMD processor. Please help.

I would go with a second hand or refurbished Core 2 Quad because it will preform much better with demanding applications. By the way you can buy new socket 775 motherboards (from Gigabyte) with DDR3 support and PCI slots for cheap, which could improve your build.

sell that pc than asemble a pc. 945chipset is slower ,so buy 41chipset mobo (low cost) ddr3 ram slot, intel core2quad ,2gb 1333mhz ram x1 or x2, 40gb ssd, or amd fx or phenom processor,970chipset mobo, same ram and ssd as above.

Hi all Thanks for the quick response. Now I am getting one or two things cleared of my head. 1. AMD and INTEL are not pin to pin compatible as I always thought
2. Changing the processor might work instead of the mobo, as I thought.
As you all advised I will try to go for Gigabyte mobo, ddr3 processor etc. Thank you all once again.

I think we confused you a bit...

There are several ways possible paths:
1. (cheap way but not very effective)
Keep the mobo, get second handed Q6600, Q8200 or any other quads for LGA775
I recommend also add more DDR2 RAM...again second handed
Add a new GPU and more powerful if you like.

2. (stupid)
Get a new LGA775 mobo with DDR3 support, get DDR3 RAM, get a new or used LGA775 quad or even keep your current processor.
I would not pick this path if I were you.

3. (a bit expensive but has the best result, complete overhaul)
Get a new processor but with LGA 1155 or AM3+ (my recommendation i5 3570k or FX8350)
Get a new mobo, for intel H77 or Z77 and 970 or 990FX for AMD.
Gigabyte, MSI and ASUS are all good.
Get new DDR3 1600 modules
Add new GPU HD7850 or higher if you want

Hi, Thanks for every one for the interest shown by you, it is really impressive. My set up is Core 2 duo processor E4500 which is 2.2 GHz , on a Intel 945 GCNL mother board with a single Transcend 2GB DDR2 800 FSB RAM. I have also installed a Graphic card Nvidia GT 210 and the OS is Windows 8 pro, HD is Seagate 250GB and the monitor is LCD Samsung 740 NW.
To be frank it all started after I went for the cheap Rs.1999/- windows 8pro up grade, a chance to own a legal software at last. Installing windows 8 on a pirated XP itself worth another thread. Anyway I think I have to keep the HD to keep the Windows 8 pro licence copy even if I change the mobo is it correct?

eh...how much Rs.1999 would be in € or US$? Is this your total budget or Win8 price you have paid?
Do you have the x86 or x64 version of Win8?

If you change proc, mobo, etc. ...I do not think it is wise to keep your old OS installation.
Windows 8 pro license is not dependent to your mobo if you have the correct version.
Try to get a check of which license version you have, the one you can install on another different system or the one which you can not.

For the new system upgrade I have 2 possible paths:

1. A lot cheaper but not very effective
- Get a second handed Q6600 or Q8200
- add more DDR2 RAM, again second handed
- add better GPU, if you want
- keep everything else

2. More expensive but a lot more effective
- i5 3570k or FX8350
- 8GB DDR3 1600 RAM
- new mobo
- probably also new GPU, HDD...and an SSD if you want..
- New PSU if needed
