Tried pulling out the Pokemon "Play It!" CD and installing/running the game
on Win XP. I have managed to get the install to run using the
compatibility feature of XP but could not get the game to do more than
launch a solid balck screen and wait for a forced program close. I thought
maybe some of the DLLs used by the program needed an update, sso I located
the lateset version of the sound and video DLLs and tried replacing those.
It seems that the Play It! program is locked into a specific routine in one
DLL that is no longer included in the lateset release. Can't find any
website info relating to how to force it to work. And of course Wizards no
longer has the Pokemon cards and doesn't seem to have support fo rthe
program.

Anyone else managed to get Play It! working under XP and may be willing to
share the secret?

Hi StevenE,

I don't have the Play it! game, and I tried searching online to see if that might
have been a DOS game, however I couldn't find an answer either way ...

When a game is a DOS game, it could work using compatibility mode:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533 or by using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available,
or search at: http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a :)

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php Or try MS Virtual PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/downloads/trial.asp
which allows you to install DOS or to run any operating system inside XP.

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two excellent
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/faq.php and http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm For
sound
issues use: http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound Good Luck! :)

"Play It!" was the CD game that came with the starter deck of Pokemon cards
that taught you how to play the card game. Once you made it past the
tutorial sections, you could play regular games against the computer player
which were fairly entertaining.

"Play It!" was designed for WIndows 95/98 and upon upgrading to XP, I lost
the ability to play the game. I am pretty sure the problem is the DLLs
used by the game to display graphics and play sound. I was hoping for a
patch or instructions on how to upgrade for XP compatibility.

1. Insert CD
2. Go to My Computer
3. Right Click 'Pokemon Play It'
4. Click explore CD
5. Right Click 'Setup.exe'
6. Go to properties and hit compatibility mode.
7. Set it to Windows 98/ME
8. Apply and double click the Setup.exe file

Go through the installation process and the game will immediately load.
