Mistakenly Assigned Drive letter and "lost" data

Hi. I recently installed Windows 7. Couldn't see my external hard drive although it was "visible" in the control panel. Thought the isssue was the lack of a drive letter. Assigned a letter in disk management and then the drive "appeared" in My Computer but - the are no files on the previously very full drive. I realize that some sort of partition was created but cant imagine that I lost all data in a split second without running fdisk or the likes. I hope. How do I get the files back? Help
