extremely soft sound from speakers

I can only hear faint sounds from my two speakers. That's with my ear about an inch away from the speakers. I have full volume physically on the speakers and in the software.

I've downloaded the newest driver from Creative and its had no effect. Reinstalled the sound card and Windows 2000. Tested different speakers - they have the exact same problem.

Any suggestions?

It's probably a speaker problem. What kind are they?

They're monitor mounted speakers, for a ProView monitor. Have tested them with old computer setup and they work fine.
