I'm looking for a program to let me split my MP3's

I make back-up copies of all my audio books, and want to break these
huge files into segments approx 5 to 6 minutes long, using a natural
silent break.

I've found plenty of progs that will let me do it manually, but I was
hoping to find a way to do it automatically. (I know it'll still need
manual checking).

Anybody got any suggestions?

search this newsgroup via googles archive of it, there was a thread
about this some months ago, including links to software to do it.

This program will automatically split WAV files before they are converted to
MP3:

I would convert the mp3's to wav files, then run the resulting wavs
through CDWave. You can then change the wav files back to mp3. At
least that's the way I do it.

So will CoolEdit, as well as, I gather, most wave editing programs. You
can tell CoolEdit to split a file according to markers you specify or
have it automatically seacrh for blank spots and put the splits there.
