Hi,

I have inherited a pair of Wharfedale 507.2 speakers that work &
sound OK, but only give out v. low volume - suspect something in
crossovers may be blown - (but umm.. other possibilities?)...

Thing is, howdya get inside these things? - the tweeter has 3 screws
on front - OK, can get that out, but the bass unit seems to fit
without evidence of any fittings- feeling inside the tweeter hole for
bolts etc around the bass driver doesn't get me anywhere, & the
(glued-down) rubber cone surround doesn't *seem* to hide screws/bolts
underneath...

The cabinet itself seems also to be factory glued all round - the
back/front panels don't unscrew to allow access...

Any clues??

Hey François - yup, that's the one!

On the edge of the speaker chassis there are four notches that I was
staring at & wondering if that was the clue...

After yr post, I took a large screwdriver to one of them & applied a
bit of pressure - whoo - it came free, bayonet-style - exactly as you
described...

Merci Bien!!

Is both channels faulty the same way? If that is the case I suspect
you are looking in the wrong direction. The speaker crossovers would
not likely be broken at the same time, with the same symptoms.

Try another speaker of the same kind before you dismantle the
Wharfedales.

Per.

They used a specific custom tool for these, - I can't remember whether it
engaged 2 slots or all 4 at once - but you'd probably be best to use 2
screwdrivers, opposite, at once, to re-engage it when you put it back!

The tweeter originally had a plastic cover that fitted between the dome and
the flange, making it flush and covering its screws.

I'd tend to agree - or at least, try a "known good" pair of speakers.
The 507.2's were rated at 90dB, 8 ohms, 100W power handling.
OTOH, they had fairly simple crossovers - easy enough to check out.

Thx guys, - it turned out that both tweeters in the Wharfedales were
blown - but bass drivers seem ok - can't check Xovers at moment (yeah,
are simple - 2 inductors & a cap) - but no test equipment at home -
yeah will examine the chain back - maybe there is something up with
amp/CD player/connections etc..

Best,
