A Worthwhile Upgrade

Greetings!

I'm looking to upgrade an old Radeon 5770 soon.
While the 5770 has been a great card, it can't quite run max-settings Skyrim at 1080.

So I thought, a 3-year newer card at the same price point should be fine... except the stats aren't adding up. But the 7770's shader count and clock speeds aren't that much better.

Is relying on architecture improvement alone worth it?

I'm looking to stay in the AMD camp.

  1. Hi. What's your budget, the rest of your specs, monitor resolution and preferred websites to buy from? The HD 7770 is a good card at resolution lower than 1920 x 1080. The HD 7850 is the minimum needed at 1920 x 1080 with higher settings and reasonable frame rate.
  2. Budget is $175 max.

    Desired resolution is 1920 x 1080.

    Specs:
    Phenom II X4 - 3.2 Ghz
    8 Gigs DDR3 1333
    AMD 780 Chipset
    600 W Power Supply

I'd like to buy through NewEgg or Amazon. I don't care for TigerDirect.

The best card for that budget is the HD 7850. If you can get the 2GB version at that price after rebate, then I suggest you do it. If not, the 1GB version can often be had for $150 after rebate.
  4. Hi, would you be overclocking the new graphics card or running at stock speeds?
  5. Running stock.
  6. I would recommend going for something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125451

If you get a 7770 I doubt it will be able to game for too long without overclocking
