Hi im in quick need of help i am choosing between either a 7870 or a 660(non-ti) anyways i need a quick reply of which and a reason for it i can get a 7870 for £160 and a 660 for the same (ebay shops FTW).

Heres the rest of my system:
Intel Pentium e5800 DC 3.2ghz (really fast tbh)
Gigabyte gt 430 (runs most games (bf3) on medium)
asus p5g41t-m lx2 mobo ive checked and it has a x16 slot

Thanks, Jake

Overall hd 7870 > gtx 660.But your cpu will bottleneck gpu anything above hd 7770.
January 23, 2013 2:46:19 PM

7870 i think you mean :p  and it probs will but i dont think it actually will tbh it seems really fast to me and im used to OC'ed i7's i5's etc

i have evga 660 ftw (factory occlocked), see my signature for some info. for 1080 its great tough in FC3 i have to disable MSAA to get fps over 40 on ultra

Sorry i mean hd 7870.
January 23, 2013 2:53:24 PM

aha its fine i knew what you meant and i think i may go for a gigabyte gtx 660 2gb just because i currently have a gigabyte card and like how cool it stays even when playing very intense games but im not sure there is a evga one but that has 1 fan and look like it could get really hot

Are you going to upgrade your cpu in future?
January 23, 2013 3:06:17 PM

Im with ashish65, you may want to look at a cpu motehrboard upgrade before a new videocard,So that way when you get the money to upgrade your card you wont have to worry about bottlenecks.

whats ur powersupply.

and ur max budget for a card.

January 23, 2013 3:37:41 PM

my max budget is pushing at £160 and i currently have a 300 psu but getting a new one of those too also i want a new gpu for crysis 3 beta on the 29th!!!! then gta 5 aswell if its out (hint hint) :p

I already said hd 7770 would be best for that cpu.

Whats your max resolution?

No way your processor can handle Crysis 3 at high settings. It's about on par with an AMD A4 APU.

^ are you joking. Crysis 3 at high with e5800 cpu.

doubt so, would be unstable, crysis is highly cpu intensive.

Even if you get lga 775 core 2 quad core 3.0ghz cpu it will bottleneck with hd 7870 or gtx 660,then forget about dual core cpu !!

bottleneck shur, but i dont think hes got the budget to upgrade his plateform, so 660 or 7870 is his best bet.

If you don't have the budget, you don't have the budget. Going half way, still doesn't get you there. It's like asking what the cheapest way to get from LA to NY and then saying, well you can get to Chicago for $150. Sometimes (often?) the only sensible upgrade is no upgrade.

stillbetter to get a gpu, than upgrade his plateform :D

January 23, 2013 5:54:50 PM

i have q9550 @ 3.4 GHz and i kind of see bottleneck in BF3 multiplayer, but i get like 47 avg fps so its like 35-60 and i can live with that. if Crysis 3 is like BF3 then i should be ok

anyway core2duo lacks 2 cores, so 660 only if you switch to core2quad, tough these cpus still cost a lot. i bought mine localy for 130eur and saw another q9550 for 150eur

well thats why im saying, atleast a temporary upgrade till he can change plateform.

January 23, 2013 7:33:18 PM

well im under a tight budget as it is and i am doing a full upgrade soon getting a i7 z77 mobo etc just looking for a gpu to play crysis on ill take a bit of bottleneck for the minute dosent really bother me but just wanted an opinion 660 or 7870 i dont care about bottleneck atm
January 23, 2013 8:07:35 PM

also i really have tried to push myself to get a 7770 but just cant :/  i need somin that is powerful and will go insane when i sli/crossfire in the future

go for the 660.

660 or 7870 are pretty similar, just get whatever is the cheapest.
Either way will be a severe bottleneck for your e5800, with such a severe bottleneck your average fps may increase, but gameplay can actually become more choppy as frame latencies become larger as your cpu and gpu are totally out of sync as to what they are capable of. Your gpu will be twiddling its thumbs waiting for information and spit out frames inconsistently when it finally gets what it needs from the cpu. If your going to upgrade cpu later, don't upgrade to an i7 for gaming, its pointless, an i5 gives the same performance in games.

well he cant afford an upgrade atm so 7870 or 660 seems logical.

and maybe a cheap am3 setup down the road.

January 24, 2013 6:23:39 AM

yeah iceclock i think thats what i may do a 8320 or a 3570k (i know the 3570k is better) depends on budget :p  anyways guys thanks for the answer! and all the help i shall keep this open just incase you need to say something

pm me if u need :)

i recently also red that previous generation the i5-2500k, i7-2600/2700k are much greater overclockers than ivy bridge thats why their prices are nearly equal. so possibly think about 2500k and some great custom cooler for OC

a c 134 U Graphics card
January 25, 2013 9:07:05 PM

the 2500k isn't a bad way to go however they stopped manufacturing them they have phased them out but if you can get one I'd do that and quite possibly get a z68 chipset motherboard they are far cheaper then z77 boards.
January 25, 2013 9:28:33 PM

if they had same price, take whatever cheaper. In my country 7870 price more expensive than 660 so i took 660 :D
January 25, 2013 11:20:54 PM

The 7870 is supposed to be better than the 660. If they are the same price, get the 7870.

January 25, 2013 11:36:19 PM

Indeed the 7870 is the strong of the two cards the 660Ti is the card its supposed to go against and the 660Ti is stronger.
January 26, 2013 12:01:59 AM

Yup. 7870 is cheaper though. 3 of my friends have 660Tis. Their performance is definitely better, but it's not worth the extra cost in my opinion. You could get a 7950 for the price of some 660Tis.

January 26, 2013 12:16:19 AM

the 660 can equalize a 7870, also when overclocked can beat it, its also cheaper than the 7870, also u gotta consider that nvidia has cuda and adaptive vsync and doesnt suffer atm of micro-stuttering issues, so theres pros and cons on both sides.
