Hi:

Here is a copy of the msg I've sent to ATI tech support.

I'm wondering if anybody among the readers has encountered
such a problem or can offer suggestions.
I also wanted to share the experience I'm having with this
product with other computer users.

Thanks in advance for all replies and to TomsHardware
for making this communication possible.

Ale.

***********************************************

I am having serious problems
with my new ATI AIW RAdeon 7500, AGP 4x.

System configuration:
WinXp Pro, Intel P4 1.6A, 512 MB DDR-RAM
Motherboard: Microstar Ultra645
SIS chipset.
Monitor Optiquest Q71.
New system.

Installed the latest versions of the AMI-BIOS,
SIS AGP device drivers and ATI AIW display drivers.
For the ATI drv: the file name is wxpradeon613106015.exe
which I downloaded from the ATI web site. Acording
to ATI this version of the drv is the latest (feb 14, 2002)
and is fully supported.

Display adapter settings: 1024x768 pixels @75 HZ
which are well within h/w capabilities.

Issues seen: the system reboots unexpectedly
and I could not establish any pattern of actions
that lead to the problem.
After reboot WinXp says that the syst is recovering
from a serious system error and then says that the
ATI Radeon display adapter was not able to complete
a drawing operation and that that particular driver
appears responsible for the syst instability.

Sometimes the syst does not reboot but the screen
seems to be divided into 2 pieces, horizontally,
and there are vertical stripes from top to bottom
on the entire width of the screen.

Right now, I've disabled the drv in WinXp and don't
see the problem, but I obviously don't have all
the features offered by the package.
Even now, when WinXp starts it sometimes displays
that error recovery msg that I've mentioned.
Sometimes it takes longer for the problem to occur if the
refresh rate is 60 HZ but this ruins my eyes.
I even disabled the USB controller from the BIOS
to prevent it from using the same IRQ as the ATI
display drv, but still no success.
Sometimes the system simply freezes, stops responding
and never recovers.

I tried to get help on the Net but I did not see such
a problem being mentioned by anybody else.

I've even reformatted the hd and reinstalled
WinXp and all the s/w including ATI drivers, but to no
avail.

So at this point I've pretty much ran out of options.

It looks like the most likely cause of the described
problem is related to the ATI display drivers.

Hopefully you can help out.

Thanks,

A.

Strange filename for a driver... sounds more like the installationfile for the drivers. Did you try check the memory settings in your bios (try conservative settings) and the AGP aperture size (should be 128MB) and to disable fast writes (or something simular) to the videocard?
I'm using the same drivers with a P3 and not experiencing any problems....
