Far Cry 3 + GTX 680 = BSOD

I bought a copy of Far Cry 3 from Steam and after 5 minutes of gameplay my GPU fans are noticeably louder, after 10 minutes I get a Blue screen. Is anyone else having issues with overheating in Far Cry?

System specs:
Win 7 pro 64bit
Core i7 3.36ghz
16GB ram 1600mhz
GTX 680 Twin Frozr III
Corsair HX650W

As far as cooling goes, I use 2 140mm for intake, one 140mm and 120mm for exhaust.
CPU is cooled by Corsair H60

Finished Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Crysis 2, GTA IV/EFLC, Max Payne 3, Battlefield 3 not a single blue screen.

Yeah, far cry 3 is kind of a B****. My oced 7950 was stable for every game, 20 runs of metro benchmark etc. I play far cry 3 for 10 minutes and BSOD. Try down clocking your GPU a little bit when you play far cry 3.

Before downclocking, I'd try turning MSAA off and just going with FXAA (equals roughly 4x MSAA with less stress on the card if FC3 supports it) - that made a ton of difference with BF3 and my 670 heat and noise-wise.

Could also try Ambient Occlusion to HBAO or just plain Off and check the impact.

Would be good to monitor temps and set a more aggressive GPU fan profile.

This is bizarre I have a 7950 and play FC3 hours on end with no problems...

Well, I had my 7950 pretty highly overclocked. If you have it overclocked, downclocking for that game could work. I would try JED's suggestion first though.

damn, was thinking of picking up Farcry 3 but I only have a GTX 670 FTW... Would that be able to run the game on high graphics (not OCing??)

Yes, the 670 can run it on high. My 7950 can pretty easily without overclocking. Highest settings besides shadow, which is at high. Now mine is oced and getting 50-65 fps.

Played it at 1280x1024 at near max on my 7750 for a few weeks daily for hours while I completed single player, not a hiccup.

At stock my 7950 gets 30-40 fps maxed out everything even AA at x8 on SSAO with a 1080p monitor.

Weird, I know its a demanding game and all but so is Crysis 1/2 and from what I know they share a similar engine. Seems like its a bug in the game that causes heat issues. My card is slightly overclocked, but it comes like that from the factory and besides, my friend beat the whole game with a GTX 570 Twin Frozr III. I still have my old 570 too, I just don't want to swap out GPUs just to play a game.

Anyways, thanks for your responses.

Try downclocking first, reinstalling drivers, and JED's ideas first.

I've been looking into it more and decided not to bother getting the game after seeing this video:

Just going to pick up Metro 2033 (Way cheaper and from what I hear, a lot less issues)

Because why? Only issue i have is my 660ti feels kinda weak with fc3 so a 770 should do the trick

you right about the demo from e3. but the game itself with story and everything you can do is great tough. give it a chance, i mean there are not that many good games being released in a year, only crysis3 and gta v if it comes this year and then next year probably just cause 3. and thats it :)

metro 2033 is too darkish, and it was for free from steam in december if you liked their studio page on facebook :)  but also metro 2034 is going to be released this year i think, thats why they were giving away 2033 for free :)

Maybe I will give Far Cry 3 a chance!

Update:

This is getting kind of ridiculous, I even installed another 120MM fan on the side panel blowing air directly at the GPU, after 20 minutes, blue screen, part of my save file corrupted... This is after re-installing the driver. I am running the game on Medium settings, no AA, SSAO. How messed up is this game (or my computer for that matter) spending $500 on a brick with a DVI port, the least I can ask for is for it not to destroy the rest of my PC. I am so pissed off, I am about to buy an XBOX...LOL not really but seriously guys, if you have any suggestions let me know.

Your cards is fine if it is running other games. But it is getting rediculous. You might want to consider reinstalling Far Cry 3 or sending a complaint in to ubisoft.

It's not ubisoft's fault for stressing his GPU harder than it can handle. The game is demanding, and may expose the GPU's problem, but it is not the fault of the software maker, at least not in this case.

The only times that something like this might be a software makers fault is when they let your FPS reach a 1000 FPS on stupid menus causing overheating, but those are rare. (Starcraft 2 at release caused issues due to this).
